Our Projects

Community

One of the goals of the Friends group is to reach out and make connections with other local groups in our community.

Hamlin Lions Club

We have collaborated with the Hamlin Lions Club and have assisted several times at their delicious pancake breakfasts which have raised money for projects in the Hamlin community. The Lions Club has also supported the Friends group by providing beverages, breakfast items and pizza lunches at different Friends activities such as I Love My Park Day and our First Day Hike. We value their work and their support!

Hamlin Wheelfest

We have attended several Hamlin Wheelfest events over the years. This is a valuable outreach where we can meet and introduce ourselves to the Hamlin community. We receive many questions and have even gained new members during this event. We also get to walk around and view the talented exhibitors at the various booths and munch on the many delicious food items offered. What an enjoyable event.

Wild Kratts Event at Kendall Elementary

We were so excited to be invited to the annual Wild Kratts event at Kendall Elementary School for two years. We had a bluebird display with bluebird houses, nests, eggs, and many other items related to our bluebird monitoring. We had many excited students and adults stop by to visit with us. As a bonus, several of our members were able to walk around the many exhibits to learn exciting information from other groups. We were also able to gain contacts that we hope to work with in the future. Go Kendall!

We’re always looking to give back to the community!

  • Invasive Swallowwort Removal

    August 26, 2026  10:00 am - 11:30 am
    Area 5 West end

    Invasive Swallowwort Removal
Take action to protect pollinator habitat! European Swallowwort is an aggressive, non-native plant that disrupts the food web by outcompeting native species. Each stem pulled or cut helps to restore habitat and prevent the spread of this invasive species. How much swallowwort do you think we can remove? We'll weigh our bags at the end of the morning to find out!

Participants are encouraged to bring their own tools and gloves, though all necessary tools, garbage bags, and prizes will be provided! These programs are 1 mile or less. Meet at the front left of the Area 5 parking area. Join us for one, some, or all of these programs, which will meet between 10:00am-11:30am on the following dates:
    Friday, August 21
    Wednesday, August 26
    Friday, August 28

Teddy Bear Picnic

Hamlin Public Library

We had our first Teddy Bear Picnic this summer. The Hamlin library staff read two engaging bear stories, and our environmental educators provided a cute bear mask craft. While the “cubs” were engaged, the Friends hid stuffies and the cubs went on an animal safari “hunt”. The event was a huge success, and we plan to have more story time events next year.
